Beyond Useful & Beautiful: Rethinking Domestic Craft

The above was an exhibition in 2012 at the Houston Centre for Contemporary Craft (HCCC).

On there website about the exhibition it talks about crafts in the domestic space. ‘Historically, craft objects were made with a functional purpose.’ So ceramic items were made to be eaten off (plates) and fabrics were made into quilts to keep warm. But the artists in the show used these domestic crafts or domestic items to create pieces which aren’t used in a domestic way. The pieces are no longer useful for their original purpose as a domestic item.
