Paula Harper ‘The First Feminist Art Program: A view from the 1980’s’ (1985)

From reading this I learnt that there was both positive and negative effects of having an all women’s art program in the 1970’s. The program gave the women the confidence to judge their own instincts and create works without being compared to male artists.

The problem with them not interacting with other male artists is that they were not exposed to competing with men for exhibitions like they would outside of the program.

One thing that really surprised me was that they were encouraged to express anger towards men and even criticised for being in relationships with men. We are no better than men, and men are no better than women, so why were they being encouraged to express anger towards them? Instead of being angry they should be opening up men’s eyes to show that we (women) are just as good as them.
