The lack of blood on my vagina’s is a purposeful decision as I didn’t want them to simply represent the female sex organ. My work is not about menstruation and needing to talk about that. The vagina is something that makes us female but doesn’t define us as a women.
The use of vitrified porcelain and being able to visually see the vaginal forms signifies strength. – In traditional western painting women’s genitals were covered while men’s were on show as a symbol of who is the stronger sex. Freud also said that women had penis envy. Showing the vagina was then seen as a symbol of strength in second wave feminist art as it counteracted this theory.
